Camera shy? Apparently not shy enough to actually think before you tell me to adjust something that I’ve shot.
It’s funny, but, as a videographer, when I’m paying someone, it’s usually because they’re providing a service that I can’t or don’t know how to do myself. Yet when I get moolah put in my hand, I get a teaching course, a lengthened session in the name of bobby pins and shiny noses or a complete redo purely on the basis of self dissatisfaction.
Yes, it’s my job to teach you how to move, pose, smile, turn, look. But sometimes the best just still isn’t going to be to your liking. And it’s not my fault.
I’m not going to make you look or sound differently.
I’m dreadfully sorry I don’t come with my own magical face and body beautifier transformation machine. If I did, I’d be a rich fellow. You look fine, really. Because, with the right angles and lighting, I’m going to make you look awesome.
Everybody’s voice sounds better in his or her head. So get ready to cringe when you hit play. Don’t count on a voiceover to fill in while you’re speaking—except if you want to look like you’re starring in Godzilla 2000.
And I’m not doing a redo because you think you look bad.
Unless you’ve undergone some kind of emotional crisis during the night, you look the same as you did yesterday. And the day before that. And the day before that.
Reshooting would be a complete waste of time if it’s out of vanity rather than another reason. Sure you have a few occasions where reshooting is needed. You’re not one of them.

Think about the pettiness of your issue before you ask the videographer for a reshoot.
Don’t be vanilla or you will look bad.
If you’re boring, conformist or afraid to make things happen during your closeup, it’s going to come out plain. There’s a multitude of reasons people watch videos. Standing out from the other videos and sparking interest sit pretty high at the top of the list.
Be yourself, but be bold. Just get out there and do it. If you’re normally calmed down, perhaps you need to crank it up a notch. Believe there’s something about you that makes your video cool and embrace it.
You have to trust that I know what I’m doing.
Thanks so much for the lesson on acting basics at the shoot today. I learned that in first grade.
You hired me to know more than you. You have to trust me; giving me a crash course on silly topics burns the clock and makes you look lordly—and not in a good way. I’m combining years of experience and acquired skills to do my best for you. If you let me do my job, perhaps you’ll be humble enough to see it.
