The Formula for an Exceptional Landing Page

There was a day, not too long ago, that not having a simple website was killer to your business.  Now, businesses need multiple online platforms like Twitter, Instagram and blogs.  In addition to all of that, you still need that website to be kickass if you want the edge on your competition.

No business’s website can be complete without a well-planned and effective landing page.  This page is designed for a single objective.  It has to be effective.  It has to be distinct.  It has to look good.

Unfortunately, there’s no easy blueprint or map to help create a landing page.  In fact, that would really defeat the purpose.  The point is that you don’t want your site to be like your competition’s.  There is some real psychology, and there are lots of components that all truly effective landing pages have in common.

First Things First: A Killer Headline

This is where everything begins on your landing page.  It needs to be a compelling, grabbing the attention of the visitor and sparking interest in what the rest of the page has to say.

It also needs to be short, sweet and to the point.  Bogging users down with wordy explanations and boring details right away is off-putting at best.  A great headline will be no more than 20 words, but just 10 is the true sweet spot.

Continue the Persuasion

A headline will get your user to look, and a subheadline will make them stay.  An impressive headline means nothing if the rest of your content pushes the user away.  Take what’s in your headline and push that concept further to keep users exploring.

Show, Don’t Tell

A picture really is worth a thousand words, so use one!  Provide some sort of visual representation (in the form of a picture or video) of what product or service you’re offering, giving the users a better understanding of what you’re selling.

This isn’t a time for stock images.  You need a good, high-quality image to really get your message across.

When potential customers search for your product or service, a dedicated landing page with a call to action will boost conversions.

Keep Your Value Clear

Of course, you need to explain your value and the benefits customers will receive either from working with you or using your product versus some other company’s.  Answer the customer’s most important question: what’s in it for them?

In doing this, make sure you’re being clear.  Creating a bulleted list of benefits filled with bold, honest statements will convert more visitors.

Maintain a Good Flow

Just as important as your content is the way that you present it.  Your landing page should be a distinct departure from the rest of your site.  You want to keep the information that your provide as minimal as possible. Set that information up in an easy to access way.  The landing page that you create will generate more conversions and responses if you spark cognitive engagement.

Prove That You’re Legit

It should be no surprise that people want proof.  Assure your users that you’re an actual, honest, real company by providing multiple contact methods.  Providing a phone number, an address and an email address, and even a contact form for them to fill out is a great way to let them know that you’re real and real responsive.

Last, but Certainly Not Least: You’re Call to Action

The call to action that you provide is critical to you achieving your conversions goal because it is the sole target of your page.  It is what you want people to interact with.

As with the rest of your landing page, it needs to be concise and compelling.  Users have been trained to expect that your CTA will be in the form of the button, and this is a tried and true method that you shouldn’t stray from.

Attract the visitor’s eye to your CTA with a contrasting hue.  You don’t want it to get lost in the color scheme of the rest of your site, so make it stand out with an eye-catching color change.
